What is a mortise lock?

The frame of a door with a mortise lock will have a solid metal plate that is positioned to be flush with the frame. It will be screwed into place onto the frame of the door. Inside the plate lies the locking device for the door, which is usually a steel bolt, slides into the opening with the turn of a key. This results in a very secure doorway.

A mortise lock has a few pros and cons. They are more expensive than regular cylinder door locks, but they also provide a much greater level of security than another form of lock.
